With the development of antibiotics, and biochemical immune products, many infectious diseases that harm animals have been basically controlled. According to the International Yearbook of Veterinary Medicine from 1972 to 1978, there are 52 major infectious diseases of livestock and poultry in the world, due to the active measures taken by various countries and received significant control effect. On the contrary, many parasitic diseases still threaten the growth and breeding of livestock and poultry, at least 1.5 billion (1/3 of the total) die from helminthic diseases every year, with economic losses of more than 10 billion dollars. In China, millions of livestock die from parasitic diseases each year. More livestock and poultry are affected by parasitic diseases, which hinder their growth and development, damage their fur, and seriously affect the quality and yield of eggs, meat, milk, skin and fur, causing huge economic losses. There are still more than 40 kinds of zoonotic parasitic diseases that seriously endanger human and animal health, so the research and development of broad-spectrum, high-efficiency, low-toxicity internal and external anti-parasitic veterinary drug varieties are valued by all countries.

In 1983, the total output value of veterinary drugs in the world was 6 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 7.5% of the total pharmaceutical output value of 80 billion U.S. dollars. In the same year in the world's total sales of veterinary drugs, feed additives accounted for 42%, chemotherapeutics accounted for only 47%, biochemical immune products 11%.

Many large international multinational pharmaceutical companies are producing and selling veterinary drugs at the same time. According to the 1982 edition of the U.S. "Veterinary Drug Index" contained, there are 163 companies that also operate or specialize in veterinary medicine. According to 1985 statistics, China has 27 veterinary biological drug factories, of which Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Lanzhou four factories are the most famous; production of veterinary antibiotics, chemotherapeutics, Chinese medicine, additives and various preparations of veterinary medicine factory about 250.

By the end of 2010, there were about 1700 GMP-certified veterinary medicine factories. Veterinary drugs are further divided into powder, injection (Animal Injection), bulk, premix, tablet, oral solution, etc. There are Chinese herbal extracts, which have more stringent requirements for the production of raw materials.

At present, there are nearly 600 veterinary medicine manufacturers above the scale, with 29 dosage forms and nearly 2,000 varieties of products, some of which are also sold to North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, etc. The compound growth rate of industrial output value of China's veterinary medicine industry reached more than 20% from 2001 to 2011. At the same time, the state has accelerated the integration of the industry through GMP certification, GSP certification, industry planning, technology updating and other measures to promote China as one of the fastest growing countries in the veterinary medicine industry.

In 2011, China's veterinary medicine industry showed good development, the veterinary medicine industry to achieve a total industrial output value of 72.908 billion yuan; to achieve sales revenue of 69.815 billion yuan, an increase of 35.04%.

In order to promote the healthy development of the veterinary industry, China on January 1, 2006 mandatory implementation of the "veterinary GMP specification", the newly opened veterinary drug production enterprises must obtain veterinary GMP certificate before the specified procedures for "veterinary drug production license" and product approval number.

In the early stage of the development of animal husbandry, to prevent and control animal diseases by all means and reduce animal deaths is the first priority of veterinary medicine, so veterinary medicine regardless of the harm, as long as the efficacy; at present, as animal diseases are still complex, veterinary medicine bears the task of both preventing disease and promoting growth, but also to control drug residues and drug costs, so efficient, low toxicity, low residue of Natural Veterinary Pharmaceuticals is the direction of development; in the future, with the reduction of animal infectious diseases, the use of veterinary medicine to treat food animals that have developed disease has lost its significance, the use of non-toxic, drug-free veterinary medicine has become the direction of development.
